Tuesday was the first day of the mountaineering class that I am taking over the summer and Wednesday was the first hike. It was a rough one too. It was a steep trail/road, steep enough that I would think twice before riding the Predator up it, and it was sandy like a lot of the washes in NM which made it harder to go up. Then near the top it got twice as steep and sandy - I wouldn't take a 4x4 ATV up this, but the view at the top was really good. Today I was pretty sore when I got up, but I have pretty much loosened back up. Here are the pictures:
That white stripe is the LA aquaduct.

Way out there you can see the airstrip for the Inyokern airport. Some time I will go back up there on a clear day and get a better picture.

Ok, the info was about a mile hike with about 1700 ft in elevation gain.

Do they teach you how to climb up a mountain? I figured that was pretty instinctive. Thats a hell of a place to take up climbing though. Try to find a mountain that is air conditioned.
They teach a little about serious climbing, repelling, bouldering, navigation (by compass), Rope tying, etc, just some of everything. I took it mainly as something to do and learn more of the area.
